CNSI High Performance Computing at UC Santa Barbara

Computer Cluster

Welcome to the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) High Performance Computing Facility at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Our mission is to enable CNSI researchers to perform large calculations that cannot be achieved using your local resources.

We provide both the hardware to run calculations as well as consulting services (free to CNSI researchers) to help you to get codes running efficiently. In addition to the CNSI owned cluster, we operate a shared cluster facility, which enables researchers to spend their money on only the compute nodes, not the infrastructure and management.

If you make use of the our facilities, please acknowledge the "CNSI Computing Facility" and for Dell and SGI users: NSF grant no. CHE-0321368, while for Nano, QSR, or Lattice: Hewlett-Packard.

Currently use of the CNSI HPC facilities is free for all UCSB researchers, although in the future there will be a nominal cost to cover a percentage of the operation and upkeep of the facilities. Rates will be reduced for CNSI researchers, and there will be no charge to participants in the Shared Cluster Program.

Research Collaboration Between UCSB and UCLA

Computer NodesIn addition to computing resources at UCSB, the CNSI facility at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) provides computing systems such as the HP CNSI-Beowulf Clusters. Computing facilities at both locations of CNSI can be accessed via the web through a single sign on at the UC Grid Portal, and many UCSB clusters can be accessed at UCSB Grid.

Working with the Computer Science department, we are also working on enabling computing via the Grid on idling workstations and clusters.

Academic and Industrial Partners

CNSI is building on a visionary investment in future education, research and technological resources given by the State of California. Utilizing the collaborative strengths of institutes participants and resources, CNSI seeks new alliances with industry, universities, and national laboratories.
