Over 10,000 square feet of the CNSI is dedicated to the characterization of materials of every sort and nature. The physical, chemical, electrical, optical and magnetic properties of materials are resolved through state-of-the-art instrumentation. A wide array of analytical tools are available for the characterization of nanostructured materials. Electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopes, depth profiling and sample preparation, and compositional analysis are available on a recharge basis for both on-campus researchers and off-campus affiliates. The Bruker 800MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer is available for structure characterization of small molecule and limited quantity samples. Biochemists, Materials Scientists and Biologists each take advantage of this high resolution characterization tool. For more information please contact the area coordinator, Hongjun Zhou.
200, 300 and 500MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers are available for on- and off-campus researchers to perform structure analysis of nano materials being researched and synthesized at the California NanoSystems Institute and elsewhere. Additional tools for FTIR, RAMAN and EPR spectroscopy are also available. Please contact the area coordinator, Jerry Hu, for more information.
There are seven state-of-art x-ray spectrometers for (i) small and wide angle x-ray scattering and diffraction, (ii) thin-film characterization, (iii) in-situ powder diffractometry and (iv) small molecule x-ray crystallography located in Elings Hall.
