The synthesis and characterization of advanced materials and nanostructures requires skills and collaborations in all areas of chemical synthesis. To facilitate the collaborative effort, the CNSI has established the Chemical Nanostructures Laboratory (CNL), a 1200 square foot facility which is a shared wet laboratory space surrounded by state of the art equipment for materials testing and evaluation . CNL is targeted to provide synergistic support between developing synthetic methodologies for and understanding of the physical, chemical and biological attributes of nanostructured materials in the chemical arena.
The main application of DSC is in studying phase transitions of materials such as melting, glass transition or exothermic decomposition. These transitions involve energy changes that can be detected by DSC with high sensitivity.
TGA measures weight loss of a material over a wide temperature range. It can be used to determine the thermal decomposition characteristics of a material.
The Tensor 27 (Bruker Optics) is used to measure the aborption of a material within the spectral range from 7,500 to 370 cm-1 with a standard KBr beamsplitter. The instrument is equipped with an ATR (Attenuated Total Reflection) cell.
The Agilent 1200 Series HPLC system is ideally suited to GPC-SEC analysis. The precision of its isocratic solvent delivery system provides the constant, stable flow rate that is essential to maintain the high resolution of the GPC-SEC column. The high flow precision and the excellent temperature stability of the Agilent 1200 Series thermostatted column compartment ensure highest accuracy and precision of molecular weight determinations. Column temperature stability is guaranteed from 10°C below ambient to 80 °C or alternatively to 100°C.
Agilent 8453 UV-Vis Detector measures the absorption of a material in UV-Vis range. Diode array spectrometers contain thousands of individual photo-detectors enabling them to measure the intensity at many wavelengths simultaneously. Absorbance spectra can be obtained in a fraction of a second, and several wavelengths of light can be monitored simultaneously during kinetic experiments.
Coatmaster 509 MC film applicator is specially designed for making films on glass panes, test charts or foils with controlled thicknesses. This instrument is provided with control box with foil keyboard and allows one to set drying parameters (speed, temperature etc.). This instrument also serves as drying time recorder.
Dry solvent system allows the delivery of anhydrous solvents under inert atmosphere for water and air sensitive chemistry
