STAGE Announces the Winners of the 3rd STAGE International Script Competition

Photograph 51, by Anna Ziegler, has been awarded the $10,000 first prize in the STAGE International Competition for plays about science and technology. Ms. Ziegler’s winning play was chosen by Pulitzer, Tony, Olivier & Nobel-winning judges David Auburn, David Lindsay-Abaire, John Guare, Dr. Douglas Osheroff & Sir Anthony Leggett. STAGE - Scientists, Technologists and Artists Generating Exploration - is a collaboration between the Professional Artists Lab and the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Physicists Discover How Fundamental Particles Lose Track of Quantum Mechanical Properties

In today’s Science Express, the advance online publication of the journal Science, researchers report a series of experiments that mark an important step toward understanding a longstanding fundamental physics problem of quantum mechanics. The scientists presented their findings at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society here this week.

Physicist David Awschalom Awarded UCSB Faculty’s Top Honor

The faculty of the University of California, Santa Barbara has bestowed its highest honor on David Awschalom, an internationally recognized researcher who is a professor of physics and of electrical and computer engineering at UCSB. Awschalom has been named Faculty Research Lecturer for 2008.
