New additions to the CNSI community include Michael Gordon (Assistant Professor, Chemical Engineering), Peter Duda (Development Engineer for the Nanostructures Cleanroom Facility) and visiting researchers Scott Manalis, Jean-Marie Tarascon, and Ifor Samuel. (More...)
There is a new way to explore the research being conducted in Elings Hall. A series of display monitors mounted in the 1st floor hallway exhibit research images, facts and videos pertaining to the labs at which each screen is stationed. Highlights include descriptions of the spectroscopy equipment, information on the xray diffraction facilities and a real-time video of magnetic switching at small-length scales, accomplished by applying magnetic fields in different directions. Two screens stationed at the main entrances to the building also serve as directories.
The 4th round of the STAGE International Script Competition is now officially underway. Scripts will be accepted June 15 - December 15, 2009. (More...)

Conference Chairman: David Awschalom, UC Santa Barbara
Co-Chair: James Gimzewski, UC Los Angeles
Seeing at the Nanoscale VII provides an optimum forum for scientists to have an in-depth discussion on a wide variety of nanotechnology topics. The conference also provides a unique opportunity to interact with leading SPM scientists to solve problems through brainstorming and hands-on experience.
There are now several Ethernet Internet cords available for use in the first floor Elings Hall Lobby. The Internet access is available for public use during normal building hours.
Elings Hall is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8a.m. to 5p.m. and is closed to the public at night, on the weekends and on holidays. Access is obtained via personally issued access cards. (More...)
The Biological Nanostructures Laboratory (BNL) has been further developed into its three subunits: Autoclave Lab, Tissue Culture Lab (for mammalian cell culture) and Main Lab (Molecular Biology and recombinant Protein Expression). (More...)
The Institute received a large number of applications for the Prize Fellowships and close to 30% of them were international candidates. The applicant pool consisted of many individuals with exceptional achievements in their field and outstanding letters of recommendation. A committee of CNSI faculty from across the science and engineering disciplines carefully selected the finalists.
The winning fellows are: Dr. John Franck, UC Berkeley, Dr. Matteo Mariantoni, Walther-Meissner-Institut and Technical University, Germany and Dr. Jason Spruell, Northwestern University. (More...)
Congratulations to the award recipients for funding period July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010:
Erik Lucero, Physics Department, was awarded the APS "Best Student Presentation" for his experimental paper entitled "High fidelity gates in Josephson phase qubits" at the March 2009 APS Meeting in Pittsburg. The honor also included a $500 cash prize. The Institute for Quantum Computing invited Erik to present the talk and receive the award at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
Nobel Laureate Alan Heeger (2000, Chemistry) and STAGE founder/director Nancy Kawalek presented New York playwright Anna Ziegler with the 3rd STAGE International Script Competition prize for the best new play about science and technology. The $10,000 prize was awarded at a short ceremony on Saturday, April 11 at 8:00 p.m. at the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles, prior to a performance of the winning play, Photograph 51. (More...)
The California Nanosystems Institute (CNSI) at the University of California, Santa Barbara, hosts education programs that create interdisciplinary learning and mentoring opportunities in nanoscale science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. (More...)
Lunch with Faculty is a quarterly opportunity for UCSB undergraduates to learn about research and careers in science and engineering by interacting with CNSI Faculty. If you are interested in participating, please contact Ofelia Aguirre for additional information.
Beginning in Fall 2009 CNSI Lunchtime Seminar presentations will be recorded and posted on the CNSI website. The videos will be available to the public and will remain archived on the website.
The CNSI Lunchtime Seminars are intended to bring together a broad community of researchers and ideas in the area of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, are held Fridays in Elings Hall from 12:00pm-1:00pm during the academic year. Seminars will resume in Fall 2009.
Visit the Seminars & Events Archive page to see complete listing of past events.
